Word and Excel are both very powerful, and my usual advice when someone makes the excuse "Word can't format it that way" is that if you can think up how you want your document to do it, Word can do it (it just might need some coercion!). And, as typically is the case with computers, there may be more than one way to achieve what you want, some of which are vastly easier than others.
